CONVENTION THEME

Regeneration is the process of regrowing or replacing what was lost. The overall health of our schools depends upon our collective commitment to continual growth and improvement. Our schools have experienced various losses over the past few years, and we now have an opportunity to rebuild and strengthen. This is the focus for this year’s teacher convention.

Each of our keynote speakers exemplifies the importance of critical thinking in the face of challenges to explore new strategies for higher levels of effectiveness and joy as Christian educators. From engaging keynote sessions, skill–based workshops, and roundtable discussions about the new Alberta curriculum, teachers will receive tools and inspiration for experiencing regeneration, both professionally and personally.

keynote session topics

Session One—A Classroom Transformed
Karen Hills, Retired Teacher
Professional crisis that leads to improved teaching. After teaching at public schools for many years, Karen moved to teaching at a Christian school. Her experience led her to seeing that, after the initial excitement wore off, she was not teaching anything differently in the Christian classroom than she was in a public one. This led to a professional crisis, a professional and spiritual learning journey, and a complete change in the way she approached teaching in the Christian classroom.

Session Two—A School Transformed
Phil Hills, Regional Director of ACSI Western Canada

Session Three—A Student Transformed
Alyssa Michaud, Musicologist at Ambrose College
Christian educators share a belief in the distinctive value of a faith-based education, but how can we be certain of the extent to which our ideals and intentions translate into meaningful, lasting transformation in our students? Across her years as a student, Alyssa Michaud was enrolled in three faith-based academic institutions and also studied at three public institutions, and she has since taught at both Christian and public universities. Her story is one in which these significant shifts in context and perspective have afforded her unique opportunities to engage with contrasting approaches to education and personal formation. Weaving together qualitative research and personal narrative, Dr. Michaud synthesizes her perspectives as an ACSI alumna and a Christian scholar and educator in order to offer encouragement to teachers seeking to foster regeneration through their teaching practice.

Ongoing, localized and personalized professional development is essential to the flourishing of teachers. ACSIWC provides structured events to help meet the development goals of Christian schools and their teachers. Each year we host Teacher Conventions which local committees help plan. These conventions feature both keynote presentations and workshops which are intended to match the professional goals of our schools. The distinctive element of each convention is the Christ-centered foundation of all learning experiences for teachers. Every educational topic is presented through the lens of the Biblical narrative. Conventions inform, equip and ultimately inspire.
