Keynote Speaker
Toni Boer is Cree/Métis from the Beaver Lake Nation in Alberta, Canada. She worked in the Prince George school district as an Indigenous Education worker for 15 years. After returning to school when she was 36 years old, she earned her Bachelor in both Indigenous Studies and Education. Toni has been teaching at Westside Academy for the past 5 years. There she walks alongside fellow peers to grow in the understanding of reconciliation and the importance of implementing meaningful Indigenous practices in the classroom.
Session Topics
Session 1—Residential Schools
What the Bible says about belonging.
Interactive group activity based on Shi-Shi-Etko
Discussion: What do we do with the information and how do we approach it in our learning?
Session 2—Ideas of How to Implement Meaningful Indigenous Learning Into Our Classrooms
Finding the “through–lines” between Indigenous ways of knowing and a biblical worldview (hands on activity).
Learning is embedded in memory, history and story.
Session 3—Knowledge Sharing
Toni will share a few ways that she has implemented Indigenous learning into her classroom teaching. She will also share lesson plans that she has taught about Totems, medicine pouches, and drum gifting.
